What Is Foster-to-Adopt?
Foster-to-adopt is a special program that allows you to welcome an animal into your home on a temporary basis before making a permanent adoption decision. It gives both the animal and the family time to adjust, bond, and make sure the match is truly the right fit. During this period, the animal lives with you as a foster while receiving love, care, and a stable environment.
This program is especially helpful because it lets you see the animal’s personality in a real home setting—how they behave with people, other pets, routines, and daily life. For the animal, foster-to-adopt provides a safe, calm space to decompress from shelter stress and learn what it feels like to be part of a family.
If, at the end of the foster-to-adopt period, you decide to move forward with adoption, you simply complete the adoption process and make it official. If it turns out not to be the right match, the animal returns to the rescue and we continue searching for the best forever home—no pressure and no guilt. Foster-to-adopt is all about thoughtful, responsible adoptions and happy endings for everyone involved. 🐾
Care Responsibility During Foster-to-Adopt
While participating in the foster-to-adopt program, you are fully responsible for the animal’s safety, health, and well-being. If the animal becomes injured, neglected, or harmed due to lack of proper care, supervision, or failure to follow provided guidelines, MASS-CARE reserves the right to immediately remove the animal from your care. In such cases, the foster-to-adopt agreement will be terminated, and you will no longer be eligible to adopt that animal.
Adoption Form Requirement After Foster-to-Adopt Period
If a foster family wishes to permanently keep an animal after the foster-to-adopt period has ended, they must complete and submit a proper Adoption Completetion Form. The adoption will only be finalized once all required forms are completed, any applicable adoption fees are paid, and the animal has been fully vetted. Until the adoption is officially approved and finalized, the animal remains the legal property of the organization.
